Felisa Dawson, security guard assault, Robert Smith

JOLIET, IL — A Joliet man pulled a knife on two supermarket workers when his lady friend got caught on the way to their getaway car with a cartload of stolen pampers, police said. Felisa Dawson, 42, rolled a shopping car loaded with four large boxes of Pampers out of the West Jefferson Street Jewel shortly after 4 p.m. Friday, police said. A security guard reportedly stopped her, but while he was escorting her back into the store, her male companion, 58-year-old Robert Smith, tackled him from behind. Smith had been parked in the fire lane waiting for Dawson, police said.

While Smith and the security guard were on the ground scuffling, Dawson punched the Jewel worker twice, police said.

A second Jewel employee arrived to lend a hand and Smith produced a knife, police said, then started swinging it at the two workers.

Authorities are searching for a gunman who opened fire Sunday at a packed nightclub during New Year’s celebrations in Istanbul. More than 500 people were inside the Reina club when what authorities believe to be a terrorist attack began at about 1:15 a.m. local time. Here is what we know so far.

The gunman killed at least 39 people and injured 69. Three of the wounded remain in critical condition, according to Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

The gunman killed at least 39 people and injured 69. Three of the wounded remain in critical condition, according to Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim. Nearly two-thirds of those killed — 24 victims — were from other countries, according to the Associated Press, including an 18-year-old Israeli woman, three Indian citizens, a 26-year-old man from Lebanon and a Belgian national, according to the countries’ respective foreign ministries and a relative. State-run Anadolu news agency reported Sunday that a 22-year-old police officer, Burak Yildiz, was shot and killed outside the nightclub. A female security guard, Hatice Karcilar, 29, was also among those killed, according to Anadolu. No word yet on any American victims.

Sleeping while on duty or sleeping on the job refers to falling asleep while on the time clock or equivalent, or else while responsible for performing some active or passive job duty. While in some jobs, this is a minor transgression or not even worthy of sanctioning, in other workplaces, this is considered gross misconduct and may be grounds for disciplinary action, including possible termination of employment. Sleeping while on duty is such an important issue that it is addressed in the employee handbook in some workplaces. Here we take a look at security guards who have been caught sleeping on the job.

The frequency of sleeping while on duty that occurs varies depending on the time of day. Daytime employees are more likely to take short naps, while graveyard shift workers have a higher likelihood of sleeping for a large portion of their shift, sometimes intentionally. A survey by the National Sleep Foundation has found that 30% of participants have admitted to sleeping while on duty. More than 90% of Americans have experienced a problem at work because of a poor night’s sleep. One in four admit to shirking duties on the job for the same reason, either calling in sick or napping during work hours.

October 2007 – a CBS news story revealed nearly a dozen security guards at a nuclear power plant who were videotaped sleeping while on duty.
December 2009 – The New York Post published a photo of a prison guard sleeping next to an inmate at the Rikers Island penitentiary. The photo was allegedly captured on the cell phone camera of another guard. Both guards were disciplined for this action, the sleeping guard for sleeping and the guard who took the photo for violating a prison policy forbidding cell phones while on duty. The inmate was not identified.

March 1987 – The Peach Bottom Nuclear Generating Station was ordered shut down by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission after four operators were found sleeping while on duty.

Davon O'Keith Wiley, security guard shooting, Samaritan’s Purse

The alleged robber fatally shot by a security guard this week in Eagan has been identified as 25-year-old Davon O’Keith Wiley of North Minneapolis. Wiley died of multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a warehouse at 985 Aldrin Drive at 12:08 a.m. Monday, the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office said Wednesday. According to investigators, the armed security officer was working in the area when he was attacked by the man, who was armed with a gun. Authorities say the man, wearing a mask, assaulted the security guard and that the guard then shot the man. It appears the security guard acted in self defense, authorities said.

A man wanted in the fatal shooting of a security guard at a Canadian National Railway facility in suburban Chicago was arrested late Sunday, officials said. Harvey police said at a news conference that 24-year-old Rashad Williams of East Crest, Illinois, was captured after he was spotted in Chicago Heights on Sunday. Harvey deputy police chief Gregory Thomas said tips from the public provided a general location that led to Williams’ arrest.
