Kim Kardashian Fires Security Guard Pascal Duvier Who Left Her Alone During Paris Robbery – According to Entertainment Tonight, two sources reveal the 36-year-old reality star and Kanye West fired the bodyguard who was with Kim on the night she was robbed in Paris. Pascal Duvier, 43, has been with the Kardashians since 2012. He went to France with the family when Kim, Kendall Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian were there for Paris Fashion Week. While Kim was home alone in her hotel room, Pascal accompanied her two sisters as they went out partying in the town.

“My security @PascalDuvier is a G,” Kim tweeted shortly following the incident on Sept. 28. The 35-year-old reality star didn’t quite say the word “thanks” in her tweet to Pascal, but having Kim Kardashian of all people call you a “G” is a pretty big compliment. And considering Pascal retweeted it, we’re thinking he was pretty flattered to be recognized for his heroics!
Luckily Kim’s security were quick enough to apprehend the man before he got his hands on the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star. Kim’s long-serving security guard Pascal Duvier wrestled the man to the ground before he could lay a finger on Kim.

The Paris hotel-residence where Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint early Monday morning has little in place to protect its guests and their belongings, former patrons tell PEOPLE exclusively. “Security is close to zero,” says a source who has stayed at the No Address Hotel multiple times. “There is one concierge for the whole building.” Around 3 a.m. local time Monday morning, five men in ski masks and police jackets overtook the hotel concierge at the No Address. Two of the armed and masked intruders entered Kardashian West’s apartment, bound her hands and feet with tape and locked her in the bathroom.

The job of security officer / security guards is often a tough one, with officers facing unknown risks and threats every time they come to work. The nature of the profession means security officers / security guards must be ready for anything, including life-or-death situations. Even seemingly low-risk locations, such as shopping malls or sporting events, can turn dangerous quickly, and security officers / security guards who work in remote areas or at night face even higher risks. As the owner of a security guard company, it is vital that you understand what your employees face every day and how to protect them. Here’s what you need to know about crimes against security officers / security guards.
The Statistics for Crimes Against Security Officers / security guards
Being a security officer / security guard is dangerous, compared with other workers, though not as dangerous as serving as a police officer.
The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics says there are about 1.1 million security officers / security guards working in the United States, the majority of them through investigation and security firms, compared with about 654,000 police officers. In 2014 (the most recent year for which statistics are available), the violent death rate was 1.36 per 100,000 for security officers and 8.23 for police officers; for the entire workforce, it was 0.52 per 100,000.
Assaults on security officers / security guards seem to be growing more common, although that may be a function of the fact that the number of security officers is growing as well.
The Laws
In all states, crimes against police officers carry special punishments; an assault of a police officer often carries a felony charge, for example. These special statuses are sometimes extended to other professions, such as firefighters, emergency responders, EMTs and even teachers.
In some states, those status are applied to security officers / security guards, but they may not carry the same penalties as crimes against police officers. For example, in Illinois, charges of battery or assault are raised to “aggravated” when knowingly committed against a private security officer, peace officers, community policing volunteers, and correctional institution employees, but upping it to a felony charge depends on the prosecutor. In California, however, the crime of “battery on a peace officer” applies to both police officers and security officers / security guards, as well as protected roles including lifeguards, doctors and nurses providing emergency medical care.
There is some merit to giving crimes against security officers / security guards special status, says Chris Hertig, a board member for the International Federation for Protection Officers, which helps set education and training standards for security officers / security guards. As initial responders in crimes, security officers / security guards may play roles similar to law enforcement, and arguably should have higher protections based on that.
The issue, however, is that that status can also imply law enforcement authority, or blur the line between security officers / security guards and police officers. “Giving a special status is a step in that direction,” he says.
What’s Next?
Hertig says he’s unaware of nationwide initiatives to increase penalties for crimes against security officers / security guards. “I don’t see a big push for it, although down the road that could change,” he says. But an uptick in violent crime could bring a greater public awareness of the risks security officers / security guards face, he says: “The first person on the scene faces the greatest danger, and in many cases, that’s a security officer.” In addition, increased use of cellphone cameras in confrontations could boost awareness of crimes against security officers / security guards.
Hertig also says that increased violence against security officers / security guards is likely to affect the way employers train them. “You can’t just put uniforms on people and hand them a policy,” he says. Employers who want to boost training efforts for their security officers / security guard can provide more information about de-escalation and responding to active threats.
How do you think crimes against security officers should be prosecuted? Are the charges and penalties heavy enough, or should they be changed? With security officers / security guards providing a significant contribution to law and order by putting their lives on the line, how do you think crimes against security officers / security guards should be prosecuted? Please feel free to leave your comments.

WILKES-BARRE — A former police officer and school district security guard pleaded guilty Monday to indecent assault of a child. Gerald John Cookus, 78, was arrested in April after police accused him of inappropriately touching an 8-year-old girl. He initially faced charges of indecent assault of a person under 13 and endangering the welfare of children, but the latter charge was dismissed when Cookus waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
Cookus, a former member of the Wilkes-Barre Police Department, was most recently employed as a security guard at Plains/Solomon Junior High School. Authorities said the alleged assault occurred off school grounds.
Investigators said Cookus was observed touching the girl in an inappropriate manner then massaging her buttocks.
During questioning, Cookus denied sexually assaulting the girl and said he massaged the child’s buttocks because he thought she liked it and “was doing her a favor,” according to prosecutors. Cookus then told investigators the allegations are going to ruin his “life and his career as a law enforcement officer,” prosecutors said.
Authorities said Cookus also admitted to engaging in other inappropriate behavior.
After retiring, he became director of security for Wilkes University before taking a job as a security officer and greeter for the Wilkes-Barre Area School District in November 2013.
Upon accepting Cookus’ plea to the felony charge, Sklarosky ordered the former lawman to have no contact with the victim, nor any unsupervised contact with minors.
Cookus will be required to register with state police as a sex offender for life and undergo sex offender therapy, the judge ordered. He was also banned from visiting any area children frequent — such as schools, parks, public pools or playgrounds.
Sklarosky allowed Cookus to remain free on $25,000 unsecured bail pending sentencing, set for Feb. 7.

U.S. social media strategy can use Twitter more effectively to weaken ISIS influence: Opponents of ISIS and Syria are six times greater in number on Twitter than ISIS supporters, but those sympathetic to the group are more active on the social media platform, according to a new RAND Corporation study. Opponents of ISIS and Syria are six times greater in number on Twitter than ISIS supporters, but those sympathetic to the group are more active on the social media platform, according to a new RAND Corporation study.
RANDnotes that the researchers, analyzing more than twenty-three million tweets posted in Arabic over a 10-month period, found that, on average, supporters of ISIS produce 50 percent more tweets than opponents on a typical day, although there is evidence that ISIS opponents are increasing their activity.
Researchers say that U.S. officials should do more to support opponents of ISIS on Twitter, possibly offering social media trainings and other engagements to enhance the effectiveness and reach of their messaging.
“Organizations such as the U.S. military and the State Department looking to counter-message ISIS on Twitter should tailor messages and target them to specific communities,” said Elizabeth Bodine-Baron, the study’s lead author and an engineer at RAND, a nonprofit research organization. “The ISIS Twitter universe is highly fragmented and consists of several different communities with different concerns, so messages need to be aimed at specific audiences, rather than trying to craft a one-size-fits-all message.”
Like no terrorist organization before, ISIS has used Twitter and other social media channels to broadcast its message, inspire followers and recruit new fighters. Though less heralded, ISIS opponents also have taken to Twitter to denounce the ISIS message.
RAND researchers used a variety of methods to analyze twenty-three million tweets posted by 771,327 users from July 2014 to April 2015. The findings allowed researchers to identify more than 20,000 distinct user communities and group those into four major meta-communities that characterize the conversation about ISIS on Twitter.
Those four meta-communities include: Shia (they generally link ISIS to Saudi Arabia but express support toward the international coalition fighting ISIS), Sunni (the most fractured group, with several sub-communities focused on country-specific issues), Syrian mujahedeen (opposed to the leadership of Bashar al-Assad in Syria with mixed attitudes toward ISIS), and ISIS supporters (this group frequently invokes threats against Islam, characterizes its enemies as “other” and employs social media strategies such as actively encouraging sympathizers to “spread” messages to expand their reach).
Though fragmented, the patterns of connection between the communities opposed to ISIS suggest inroads for influence that the U.S. government’s social media strategy should explore in order to weaken the ISIS Twitter propaganda and online recruitment, according to researchers.
The study showed that near the end of its reporting period (spring 2015), the number of ISIS supporters active on Twitter decreased while the number of opponents increased. This change coincided with Twitter’s campaign to suspend the accounts of ISIS supporters. Researchers also found that ISIS atrocities such as the burning of the body of a Jordanian pilot sparked a huge upsurge in anti-ISIS tweets.
“Twitter should continue its campaign of account suspensions that harasses ISIS Twitter users, forcing them to lose valuable time reacquiring followers, and ultimately may push some to use channels that are far less public than Twitter,” said Todd Helmus, an author of the report and a RAND senior behavioral scientist.
The study used different network analysis tools and algorithms to identify and characterize the conversation on Twitter about ISIS. For example, researchers found that they could separate supporters from opponents using a simple method: ISIS supporters typically refer to the organization in Arabic as the “Islamic State,” whereas opponents typically use the disrespectful Arabic acronym “Daesh.” They say the method can continue to be used to gauge the worldwide activity of supporters and opponents of ISIS.
Key findings
During the study period, ISIS 0pponents generally outnumber supporters six to one
ISIS supporters, however, routinely out-tweet opponents, producing 50 percent more tweets per day.
Lexical analysis reveals four meta-communities in the Twitter ISIS conversation: Shia, Sunni, Syrian Mujahideen, and ISIS supporters
The Shia group condemns ISIS and expresses a positive attitude toward the international coalition and Christians.
Syrian Mujahideen (anti-Assad movement) supporters have mixed attitudes toward ISIS and generally negative attitudes toward the international coalition.
ISIS supporters highlight positive themes of religion and belonging; insult Shia, the Syrian regime, and the international community; and pursue sophisticated social media strategies to spread their message.
The Sunni group is highly fractured along national lines, so different themes resonate differently within this community.
Patterns of connection among the meta-communities suggest inroads for influence
The core of the Syrian Mujahideen meta-community serves as an important connection between the Shia meta-community, some Sunni communities, and the ISIS Supporters meta-community, who are otherwise disconnected.
The Egyptian, Saudi Arabian, and Gulf Cooperation Council communities form the core of the Sunni meta-community, by far more fractured than the Shia, Syrian Mujahideen, and ISIS Supporter meta-communities.
Within the Sunni sub communities, the Yemeni community has the highest percentage of ISIS supporters and is sharply divided between ISIS supporters and opponents.
Recommendations
Research institutions should continue to use the model targeting the terms DAESH versus Islamic State for ISIS to gauge worldwide activity of ISIS supporters and opponents. The U.S. government may use such models to test the impact of anti-ISIS programs.
ISIS opponents are plentiful but may require assistance from the U.S. State Department, in the form of social media trainings and other engagements, to enhance the effectiveness and reach of their messaging. Of course, with al-Qa’eda and its affiliates counted among the ISIS opponents, care will have to be taken in selecting those suitable to train and empower.
Twitter should continue its campaign of account suspensions: This campaign likely harasses ISIS Twitter users, forces them to lose valuable time reacquiring followers, and may ultimately push some to use social media channels that are far less public and accessible than Twitter.
U.S. military Information Support Operations planners, as well as State Department messengers, should continue to highlight ISIS atrocities. The Twitter impact of the burning of the Jordanian pilot as well as previous findings suggesting a relation between ISIS atrocities and ISIS opposition on Twitter indicate that such atrocities may galvanize opponents.
Nations and organizations (such as U.S. military and State Department messengers) looking to counter message ISIS on Twitter should tailor messages for and target them to specific communities: The ISIS Twitter universe is highly fragmented and consists of different communities that care about different topics.

UCT Staff and Student Petition in Favour of Peaceful Reopening
We, the undersigned members of the University of Cape Town, believe:
* that we have a responsibility to our current and future students, and to their families, to complete the academic teaching year;* that we must resume teaching now if we are to carry out that responsibility;
* that the university is doing everything possible to support the student demand for normalisation of relations and for free education;
* that the University is fully committed to and actively engaged in institutional transformation including pedagogical and curriculum transformation and has invested significant monetary resources and managerial time to the transformation of staff and curricula;
* that many students are highlighting areas of ongoing suffering and that we will redouble our efforts to address them;
* that we have a compelling responsibility to protect the university and its resources for future generations of South Africans;
* that violence, and threats of violence, directed at any members of the institution and its facilities are equally intolerable.
We duly call upon our colleagues and the student body to:
* allow teaching to resume from Monday October 17th 2016, to allow students to sit their exams and complete the year;
* respect the urgent personal and collective interests and rights of the majority of students and staff;
