A Universal Protection Services security guard at Pittsburgh’s fancy Ross Park Mall was fired this week after bringing a gun to work, fooling around with it in the security office, and accidentally shooting a colleague in the buttocks.

PITTSBURGH —A Ross Park Mall security guard has been fired after he accidentally shot a friend in the buttocks after the mall was closed Tuesday night, police said.

The shooting happened at about 11 p.m. in the mall security office, as the guard was getting ready to go home for the night, police said.

“He was loading his personal weapon when he accidentally discharged the firearm,” Ross Township police Detective Brian Kohlhepp said. “The fired projectile went through a wooden stand and struck another person in the buttocks.”

The victim was treated at a hospital and has been released, police said.

The guard worked for Universal Protection Services, police said. He has not been identified.

Police said they do not expect to file any charges.
