Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894.
While we celebrate Labor Day 2019, Nuclear Security lieutenants with the United Security Professionals Local 2 Union working at Xcel Energy Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant have been locked out of their jobs as of Midnight on August 31st.
Monticello, MN – Nuclear Security lieutenants with the United Security Professionals Local 2 Union working at Xcel Energy Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant have been locked out of their jobs as of Midnight on august 31st.
G4S security solutions the company that has been contracted to provide the security services for Xcel Energy Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant, told them they have reached an impasse in contract negotiations with the union and have no interest in coming back to the bargaining table.
The main sticking point is a change to their health benefits package. The union says they want to work out an agreement, but according to workers there, G4S is refusing to come back to the table.
Union President Joshua Haider stated they were allowed to clock in for their shift at 5:30 p.m. but they will be locked out starting at midnight.
The unions say’s they sent G4S a last minute Either or” proposal which included.
Option A was the nuclear officers would take the new Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, but with raises to cancel out the insurance loss.
G4S wants to switch to the new Blue Cross Blue Shield package and cut their contributions by half, which is around $10 thousand dollars for each worker every year.
Option B was nuclear officers keeping the current insurance coverage but with less of a raise.
Haider says G4S called their proposals unreasonable and rejected both proposals.
A source with the union stated that when G4S took over in the spring of 2018, the company allegedly told union members both verbally and in writing they would not make any changes to their health insurance.
This source said when the two sides went to the bargaining table, health insurance was the first thing G4S mentioned they were going to change. The source says G4S told them to make up for the cost changes, they were willing to give union members a half a percent over the cost of living raise, but the union says it’s not about the money.
We are told G4S is looking to switch the union over to Blue Cross Blue Shield and workers are very worried about the dispute between Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Minnesota Hospital Association.
Workers say with BCBS denying or delaying coverage for medically necessary care, they and their families are being put at risk.
Replacement workers have been brought in. Some of the workers are from the Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant near Red Wing. Others, sources say are from out of state.
United Security Professionals Local 2 is made up of roughly 25 highly trained Nuclear Security lieutenants who supply heavy armed security to the Monticello Nuclear Power Plant. They are trained in anti-terrorism tactics, and they worry the plant will be vulnerable.
National Union of Nuclear Security Officers NUNSO, Organizing Director Steve Maritas stated this is union-busting at its best. G4S is making an example out of these officers to set the stage for its upcoming negotiations with the 75 nuclear officers who make up the rest of the security force.
NUNSO, will do whatever we have to do to assist our brothers and sisters in this fight noted Maritas.
NUNSO Organizing Director is planning to fly to Monticello, MN tomorrow to help and assist United Security Professionals Local 2 members and their families who are on the picket line. Maritas has also offered assistance in trying to mediate an end to this lockout, if G4S is willing to come back to the table and negotiate in good faith.
The Union say’s they are very concerned that with fewer people providing security, and those who are in place not being familiar with their training, tactics, security plan and layout of the plant, employees in other areas of the plant and those in the surrounding communities are being put at serious risk.
The union has asked for G4S to come back to the bargaining table, but they are refusing, and no more talks are scheduled.

The security contractor at Xcel Energy’s Monticello nuclear power plant appears set to lock out some guards after a breakdown in contract negotiations.
The lockout would affect “lieutenants “ or “shift leaders,” whose contract expires at midnight Saturday, said Josh Haider, head of United Security Professionals Local 2. There are about 25 unionized lieutenants at the Monticello plant employed by G4S, a large global security firm.
G4S and Xcel have been training replacements for union guards over the past month, Haider said.
“Should the United Security Professionals Local 2 leadership need help or support the National Union of Nuclear Security Officers NUNSO would be there to offer assistance if called upon” noted NUNSO Director Victor Nichols.

FORT PIERCE — Treasure Coast judges fear for their safety in the wake of the Orlando shooting rampage by G4S security guard Omar Mateen, who did stints guarding the county courthouses in St. Lucie and Indian River, St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said Friday. The judges want sheriff’s deputies to handle all security at the St. Lucie courthouses, as they do in Martin County, Mascara said after meeting with Chief Judge Elizabeth Metzger Monday. Deputies currently are stationed in St. Lucie and Indian River courtrooms while G4S security guards are stationed at the metal detectors at the entrances to the court buildings.
The man who committed the worst mass shooting in U.S. history had an online bride from Uzbekistan who said he beat her, co-workers who feared he had terrorist leanings and a father who hosted a cable show in which he claimed to be president of Afghanistan. Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old security guard from Fort Pierce, had been on the FBI’s radar since at least 2013, when acquaintances — at least one of them a former law enforcement officer — warned authorities that he was prone to violence, made unspecified threats and seemed to have radical Islamic ideas.
Mascara and Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar said they are satisfied with G4S’ service and employees, but will consider replacing the private security guards with deputies. There are eight or nine G4S guards in the Fort Pierce and St. Lucie West courthouses, and two in Vero Beach, both of whom have worked there for a decade.
Loar said Metzger hasn’t raised any issues with the G4S security guards at the Indian River County Courthouse and it was unclear how she feels about security there.
Replacing G4S with deputies would cost St. Lucie $200,000 more and Indian River $60,000 more than the respective $377,000 and $86,000 the sheriffs are paying G4S this year.
Loar said his staff had considered replacing G4S with deputies three months before Mateen’s shooting spree — but didn’t specify why — and are more likely to do so now.

Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old U.S.-born citizen, has been identified as the suspect in today’s mass shooting that left at least 50 dead and more than 50 others wounded at the Pulse Orlando, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Officials said Mateen had two firearms licenses — a security officer license and a statewide firearms license -– both set to expire in September 2017. Mateen worked for the security firm G4S since 2007, the company said, adding that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement.
Orlando Killer Worked For Company Transporting Illegal Immigrants Inside US; Was Interviewed By FBI 3 Times
In a surprising discovery, the Palm Beach Post first reported that according to state records, Orlando shooter Omar Mateen – who as we reported earlier was licensed as a security guard and also holds a firearms license – was employed by the US subsidiary of G4S plc, a British multinational security services company, whose US-headquarters are located in Jupiter, Fla, and which also happens to be the world’s largest security company by revenue.
Shortly thereafter, G4S confirmed that Omar Mateen has worked for the company since 2007. This is the statement released from G4S:
“We are shocked and saddened by the tragic event that occurred at the Orlando nightclub. We can confirm that Omar Mateen had been employed with G4S since September 10, 2007. We are cooperating fully with all law enforcement authorities, including the FBI, as they conduct their investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the friends, families and people affected by this unspeakable tragedy.”
In other words, Mateen who according to preliminary reports, had been on a terrorist watchlist, and who still managed to obtain weapons thanks to his various licenses and permits just last week, was employed by one of the world’s largest security companies, where he may have had extensive clearances well above his pay grade, not to mention access to sophisticated military weapons and equipment.
In the United States, G4S plays a role in the detaining and transporting of undocumented people prior to their deportation or judicial review within the U.S. and along the border, as outlined in a G4S case study entitled, “The Bus No One Wants to Catch: The End of the Road for Illegal Immigrants.” As the sole transportation provider for U.S. Customs, G4S is also profiting from the militarization of infrastructure along the US Mexico border. According to their website: “Today, along the U.S.-Mexico border more than 600 G4S Custom Protection Officers operate more than 100 vehicles used to transport the huge number of people who have been captured illegally trying to cross the border into the US.”
But where it gets more disturbing is that as Judicial Watch reported several days ago, in a post titled, “DHS Quietly Moving, Releasing Vanloads Of Illegal Aliens Away From Border“, border patrol sources said that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was quietly transporting illegal immigrants from the Mexican border to Phoenix and releasing them without proper processing or issuing court appearance documents. As a reminder, the government classifies them as Other Than Mexican (OTM) and this week around 35 were transferred 116 miles north from Tucson to a Phoenix bus station where they went their separate way. Judicial Watch was present when one of the white vans carrying a group of OTMs arrived at the Phoenix Greyhound station on Buckeye Road.
Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old U.S.-born citizen, has been identified as the suspect in today’s mass shooting that left at least 50 dead and more than 50 others wounded at the Pulse Orlando, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
In the midst of the attack, Mateen called 911 and pledged his allegiance to ISIS, according to two law enforcement officials.
ISIS supporters have cheered the massacre online and an ISIS propaganda group claimed, citing a “source,” that the shooter was an ISIS “fighter.” But there’s no evidence ISIS directed or had prior knowledge of the attack, terrorism observers told ABC News.
ISIS, which is based in Syria, has targeted gay men for beatings and murder in the Middle East and has filmed its members throwing some men suspected of being gay from the roofs of buildings.
Mateen, whose parents are from Afghanistan, was born in New York but lived in an apartment in Fort Pierce, Florida, more than 100 miles from Orlando, officials said. Officials said today he purchased two weapons, a handgun and “long gun,” just in the past few days. Law enforcement sources said the weapons used the attacker were a Glock 17 handgun and an AR-style semi-automatic rifle.
Officials said Mateen had two firearms licenses — a security officer license and a statewide firearms license -– both set to expire in September 2017. Mateen worked for the security firm G4S since 2007, the company said, adding that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement.

Four former security guards are suing G4S Secure Solutions for $3.5 million, claiming the international security company’s kiosk in a Gresham shopping center was run by a devoutly Christian supervisor who told employees their gay family members were going to hell, played videos about the Illuminati and warned that the security kiosk could be attacked by demons.
Lawsuit Says Gresham Security-Guard Supervisor Wanted To Defend Shopping Center Against Demons
The suit says supervisor referred to the Gresham Station security kiosk as a “church,” posted Bible verses on the walls, and held daily “prayer circles” with two other guards.
The religious discrimination lawsuit, filed Oct. 5 in Multnomah County Circuit Court, says when the four guards complained to upper management about supervisor Sarah Houser, they were fired.
Florida-based G4S is one of the largest security contractors in the U.S. The company runs security teams for the UK Foreign Commonwealth Office in Afghanistan, but stateside it’s mostly a staffing agency for private security guards. Its Oregon contracts include Google’s data center in The Dalles and wafer manufacturer Siltronic in Portland.
The four former guards—Wayne Rush Jr., Andrew Gale, Jimmy DrennanIII, and Alphonso Nunez–had previously worked with G4S at other Portland-area sites before arriving at Gresham Station, a shopping center with an Old Navy, a Dress Barn and a Bed Bath & Beyond.
In the lawsuit, the four guards say Houser held training sessions for Gresham Station security guards by showing a series of Christian videos on YouTube and playing recorded sermons “about God, demons, conspiracies and the Illuminati.”
The suit says Houser referred to the Gresham Station security kiosk as a “church,” posted Bible verses on the walls, and held daily “prayer circles” with two other guards. The suit says she told Rush that “they needed more Christian people to work at the Gresham Station because they were ‘opening the gates for demons to enter the site.'”
The lawsuit says Houser told Rush in May that gay people “have a choice, and they will burn in Hell because they don’t have God in their lives.”
Rush told her his future mother-in-law and his fiancee’s brother were both gay. The suit says Houser replied, “Well, they are going to hell Wayne and that’s just the truth and sometimes the truth hurts.”
The suit says the four guards submitted written complaints to regional managers about the “fervent evangelizing” by Houser and two other guards at the kiosk. The suit says G4S responded by firing all four guards.
