The owner of a security firm pleaded guilty Wednesday for stealing more than $45,000 from his seven employees and dodging thousands in taxes.
Toyin Sobanke is the owner of Tiger Security Group, Inc., which was contracted with the NYC School Construction Authority (NYCSCA) to provide security at school construction sites throughout Brooklyn.
From Jan. 2009 until Dec. 2013, NYCSCA paid more than $10 million for the services.
“Instead of paying his employees the stated wages under the contract, the defendant shorted his workers and pocketed the difference and cheated the city out of $500,000 on top of that, ” said Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson.
Sobanke, 54, under reported his $600,000 gross income in 2009 and didn’t file any taxes in 2012.
Tiger Security Group, owned by Sobanke, was hired by the NYC School Construction Authority to protect school construction sites throughout Brooklyn.
“He’s accepted full responsibility for the actions of the company,” said Sobanke’s attorney Alfredo Menedez outside of court.
The Bergen Beach resident admitted in Brooklyn Supreme Court that he falsified invoices, payroll certificates and daily sign-out logs to cheat seven employees out of proper hourly wages.
The workers were supposed to receive $17.41 per hour and $23.84 on overtime but were actually paid between $8 to $10 without overtime benefits, prosecutors said.
In exchange for Sobanke’s guilty plea he will pay back $45,368.14 in restitution to the NYCSCA and $500,000 in taxes and penalties to the city’s Department of Finance.

Nassau County police say Edgar Medina (center), along with several unknown suspects, allegedly burglarized armored car company Loomis’ vault in Hicksville using an array of tools and was apprehended with nearly $2M in his trunk. Police are asking the public’s help in identifying other alleged crew members. (NCPD).
HICKSVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A group of sophisticated burglars used tools to penetrate a vault of a Long Island armored car company Loomis and steal $1.8 million, but were foiled by an alert police officer.
The burglary at the Loomis Armored Inc. warehouse in Hicksville occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 16.
The men, who wore masks, used a sledgehammer and a hydraulic jack to bust through thick concrete walls and used other tools to break into the vault that held about $20 million, authorities said.
Police neither have a description of the other suspects nor do they know how the burglars fled. The one suspect in custody doesn’t have any ties to the company, but when asked if Major Case Bureau detectives probing the case believe it was an inside job, Krumpter would only say that the investigation is continuing.
The commissioner suspected that the burglars intended to steal as much of the $20 million as they could. If they were successful, it would have eclipsed the infamous Lufthansa heist in which mobsters allegedly stole about $6 million in cash and jewels from a terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in 1978, one of the biggest Nassauheists in American history. That case, which was planned in Bellmore, resulted in arrests just last year—35 years later.

Millstone Power Station, located in southeast Connecticut, generates enough electricity from its two operational units to power about 500,000 homes.
Unit 1 began commercial operation in December 1970, and ceased operating in July 1998. It is being decommissioned. Unit 2 began commercial operation in December 1975, and it generates 869.5 megawatts. Unit 3, which began operating in April 1986, generates 1,210 megawatts. Dominion acquired the station in March 2001.
Situated three miles west-southwest of New London, Millstone was named after the site’s historic granite quarry that produced high-quality millstones and structural building granite.
Emergency Preparedness
Below are links to Connecticut’s nuclear power plant emergency preparedness guide for the general public. It contains information about nuclear power plants and specific emergency planning information for Millstone Power Station. You can also visit the Connecticut emergency site.

Durham investigators returned to Duke Manor Apartments as they continue to investigate a shooting that seriously injured a security guard. The security guard was shot multiple times and police believe he was injured while trying to protect residents from a burglary.
Police were called to Duke Manor Monday night just before 9 p.m. When officers arrived they found the guard lying outside.
The complex caters to college students.
Resident and Central student K’La Moore said she heard the guns fired around 8:30 p.m.
“It was consistent and then it stopped and then it started again. So I’m thinking it was like two different guns because it sounded different as well,” said Moore. “Maybe about 30 seconds after that, I heard a car drive off extremely fast.”
Police said it appears the security guard interrupted a burglary in progress at an apartment.
Anyone with information about any of the shootings is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.

FJC Security guard Idrissa Camara, 53, who agreed to work overtime at Manhattan federal building shot dead by deranged gunman 68-year-old Kevin Downing, a retired U.S. Army Reserves captain who then killed himself.

The family of a security guard who killed while working at a federal building downtown Friday is now planning his funeral.
A cousin said Saturday that the family is trying to decide if Idrissa Camara, 53, shot and killed at work on Varick Street, will be buried in the United States or in his native Ivory Coast.
FJC Security guard Idrissa Camara could have been home with his children, but chose instead to put in a few hours of overtime — a decision that cost the security guard his life when a deranged gunman shot him at his post in a federal building in SoHo Friday.
Eyewitness News talked to Camara’s family and friends on Saturday, and they say that not only did he love his job as a security officer, but the armed guard never felt like it was a dangerous job. Camara often sent the money he made here back to extended family members in the Ivory Coast.
For most of the day, family and friends came to Camara’s home, all giving condolences to his wife and four children.
“If someone has a problem, we come to share the grief with them, and support them as much as we can,” says Vakoua Diomande, a family friend for 15-years.
Camara’s cousin, and leader at the family’s Harlem mosque tells Eyewitness News that the family is holding up well.
“I’m going to pray, that’s all – their spirit is high, their spirit is strong,” says Imam Komate.
Kevin Downing, 63, of Fort Lee, N.J., entered through a side entrance of the building that houses an immigration court, passport processing center and a regional office for the Department of Labor, a law enforcement official said. He shot Camara at close range, then walked through the screening area and headed toward an elevator where he encountered another employee, and then shot himself in the head, said James O’Neill, a chief with the New York Police Department.
Downing was pronounced dead at the scene.
Camara, was supposed to have gotten off work at 4 p.m. but agreed to stay on for an extra shift, FJC Security Services said. The shooting happened at 5:05 p.m. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
“That was my brother that was my brother,” the victim’s sister said.
Camara’s sister wept as she left the family’s Harlem home.
She’s devastated by the news that her brother won’t be coming home to his wife and four children.
His son posted a tribute on his Facebook page, thanking friends for their support:
I just want to thank everyone for supporting me after my fathers tragic death at work, my father was very kind person and didn’t deserve anything like this. And I wish no one would have to go what I’m going to throughly right now and god bless everyone.
His brother rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital to be with them during this tragic time.
“We just got there. We’re going to try to go there and speak to the wife, she’s upstairs. The only thing we actually, anybody knows him, don’t know him, heard about him, to pray for him. To pray for him. To pray for him,” said Ouattara Muhammad, the victim’s brother.
Because Camara was a security guard under contract to the Department of Homeland Security, his death constitutes a homicide of a federal officer.
A spokesman for FJC Security Services, the company Camara worked for, released a statement saying, “Tonight, for the first time in our 27-year history, FJC Security Services lost a member of our family when Senior Guard Idrissa Camara was shot at 201 Varick Street. He later died at Lenox Health Greenwich Village. “Idrissa Camara, 53, of Manhattan, worked for FJC for two years, when we took over the contract at that building. He worked for the prior company and we were pleased he stayed with us during that transition. “Camara, who was armed, was an extraordinary Senior Guard who was well trained, cared deeply about his job and knew that building better than anyone else. It’s clear from the facts that he never had a chance to defend himself in this instance. “Camara was scheduled to complete his day at 4:00 PM, but agreed to stay on for extra duty. That speaks volumes about the person he was.”Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family. We intend to do everything we can to stand with them during this very difficult time.”As part of our investigation, we have checked our records for any link between the shooter and FJC. Our search found no connection.”
“We are shocked and horrified at this terrible news and send our deepest condolences to Officer Camara’s family. Security officers around the city and country serve on the front line each and every day to keep us safe and secure. We are heartbroken that one of our own has fallen. We hope some of our questions in the face of this terrible tragedy will be answered. For now, we are keeping Officer Camara’s family and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.”
