CINCINNATI —A Cincinnati police officer shot and killed a robbery suspect downtown Sunday morning, police said.Police and witnesses said before the deadly shooting, the suspect held a knife to a Kroger security officer’s throat when confronted during a robbery around 7:20 a.m.

Police and witnesses said before the deadly shooting, the suspect held a knife to a Kroger security officer’s throat when confronted during a robbery around 7:20 a.m.

Investigators said around 7:45 a.m., as they looked for a person matching the suspect’s description, the confrontation unfolded.

Chief Eliot Isaac said a struggle ensued and an officer shot the suspect multiple times.

A Universal Protection Services security guard at Pittsburgh’s fancy Ross Park Mall was fired this week after bringing a gun to work, fooling around with it in the security office, and accidentally shooting a colleague in the buttocks.

PITTSBURGH —A Ross Park Mall security guard has been fired after he accidentally shot a friend in the buttocks after the mall was closed Tuesday night, police said.

The shooting happened at about 11 p.m. in the mall security office, as the guard was getting ready to go home for the night, police said.

“He was loading his personal weapon when he accidentally discharged the firearm,” Ross Township police Detective Brian Kohlhepp said. “The fired projectile went through a wooden stand and struck another person in the buttocks.”

The victim was treated at a hospital and has been released, police said.

The guard worked for Universal Protection Services, police said. He has not been identified.

Police said they do not expect to file any charges.

Security guard lost $15M worth of jewelry at Grammys: suit – A Manhattan jeweler that lends pricey bling to celebrities for red carpet events says a security guard lost $15 million in baubles during this year’s Grammy Awards. Luxury watch and jewelry house Chopard — which regularly lends its pieces to the rich and famous for the Grammy’s, Academy Awards and Golden Globes — hired Ferrari Express to secure the 53 pieces of jewelry.

Ferrari transported the pieces to the swanky Montage Hotel in Laguna Beach, Calif. on Feb. 14 for an unnamed celebrity fitting, according to the suit, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court.

But that night, instead of sending the rejected jewels to a secure vault as promised, the luxury pieces remained in the driver’s van, parked outside of his house “with minimal, if any, security” in a Los Angeles neighborhood, according to the suit.

The Ferrari employee “drove to his home in a neighborhood in which vehicle thefts are common, parked the Ferrari van on a street near his house, then went into his house leaving the jewelry unsecured and unattended in the van overnight,” the court papers read.

Four muggers in Detroit were surprised when the man they assaulted pulled out a gun and shot at them, leaving one robber in serious condition. Police say the suspects mugged an off-duty mall security guard who was on his way home, near a gas station on the city’s west side. They hit him in the head with a baton when he didn’t hand over his things quickly enough. That’s when mall security guard Cordaro Boyd who’s licensed to carry a concealed weapon, shot at his attackers.

The man who committed the worst mass shooting in U.S. history had an online bride from Uzbekistan who said he beat her, co-workers who feared he had terrorist leanings and a father who hosted a cable show in which he claimed to be president of Afghanistan. While the data does not include the number of guards who carry arms, Shoshana Walter, public safety reporter at the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR), says that the security guard industry is a parallel universe where the expected norms of policing simply don’t apply.

“The security industry is very different from the law enforcement profession,” says Walters. “They have limited powers, they don’t have the same ability to detain or arrest, or as it relates to search and seizures. But they’re often taking on the same types of roles as law enforcement officers.”

Walters says that guards often have a small fraction of the training that police officers usually get. In the state of California, for example, a police officer is required to get a minimum of 600 hours of training—an armed guard gets about 54 hours.

“The difference there is huge,” she says.

In addition to training, regulations regarding background checks for armed guards also vary widely by state.
